Casino Games - Poker Recognition

The firstjar of our poker recognition series of articles is dedicated to explaining the threshold issues involved with the various variants of poker that exist today. As well as attempting to define the features of each variant of poker, we’ll also be answering the following questions.

What is a variant?

A variant is the name a poker variant can be assigned to any other poker variant from Texas Holdem to Hi Lo to Seven Card Stud to Check, etc. But for the purposes of this article we will concentrate on the most common type, 5 card draw poker. 5 card draw poker is known as the poker form found played in most American casinos.

In the casino the game is played with a normal deck of 52 playing cards, the cards dealt are dealt face down and the player must make a hand out of three cards from the deck and two cards from the player’s hand or the player may ask for a draw. Once the cards are dealt the player must use only two of the cards in their hand and three of the cards on the table either face down or face up.

The most common type of hand in 5 card draw poker is the straight. The straight occurs when the player makes a five straight card sequence starting from the highest card in the sequence and ending with the lowest card in the sequence.

There are 3 ranks the cards in a sequence: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The highest card in a sequence is assigned the highest card in the next sequence and so on. The sequence Ace, 2, 3, 4 and 5 is the highest straight you can possibly get. This is the only hand that you can definitely make in the entire deck of 52 cards.

The next hand up is the royal flush. That is the same sequence as the straight Royal Flush. Remember that the highest card in the sequence is designated as the King, Queen, Jack, 10 of the suit. So for example the hand Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten is the royal flush. The suit in poker is the highest order of rank. When you have a hand of cards in the same suit you have a royal flush. Remember that the King of the suit is the 10, the Queen of the suit is the 9 and the Jack of the suit is the 8.

Split the cards into two hands of two cards each and play the two hands against each other. If you win both hands you will have a total of either 9,12 or 16. There are no tiered games in poker, so if the two hands total more than 21 you will win a share of the pot.

Many players will not play because the pot is too small, in these cases they will try to steal the pot with a raise. Before you decide to show your cards or call consider the size of the bet relative to the size of the pot, the number of players in the hand, the type of game and the odds of each hand.

This next hand up is very important, it will help you in building your strategy for playing Vegas88.

In this situation you have a hand of 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and An Ace. What? Don’t you wish you had all these cards? Well, in poker the more cards you have the better, so as your cards are revealed the better your chances of winning are, as in the case of a few tens.

It’s good to have a hand of multiples, like a pair of fours or fives. But what if the next three cards are the same as the previous two? With many tens you are almost certainly going broke. With low cards you can chase bigger hands and come out ahead.

Now you are probably thinking about a time when you have run into this situation, and you’re realizing how desperate you felt, and how you would have made more money if only you had those cards. You are also realizing that you probably need to read more about poker, about strategy, about the psychology of poker.
